Life Teen Mass, St. Joseph, Bread of Life

ERIE, PA

From the Rector’s Desk…. It is hard to believe that it will be 16 years tomorrow (Monday) since the terror attacks on New York City, Washington DC and Shanksville, PA. September 11, 2001 was a Monday. I can remember the day and time that I first heard of the tragedy. I was getting ready for a funeral at Blessed Sacrament. On the way to the cemetery the funeral director had the radio on and we listened in disbelief that something like this could happen in our country and so close to home. I encourage everyone on this anniversary of 9/11 to continue to pray for those people killed in the attacks, their families and for peace throughout the world. It is only with God's help that peace can prevail. Next weekend our Second Collection will be The Catholic Education Collection. The Catholic Faith, which we believe and practice, has been handed on through the centuries. Our challenge as Catholic faithful is the same: To hand on the faith to succeeding generations. Your help is needed to assist in this challenge. Please give generously to this year's Catholic Education Collection. One-half of this collection stays here at St. Peter Cathedral to help support our own religious education program. As always, know that your generosity is most appreciated. People are already talking about this Fall’s Continuing Education Series, Bishop Barron’s “Pivotal Players” videos. This is a great way to grow in our faith. We used his series last year and received many favorable comments from those who participated. With this series, Sheila Grove has lined up speakers who are very familiar with the people in the series to answer any questions you may have about the “Pivotal Players .” See the announcement in today's bulletin for more details. I look forward to seeing many of you at this series as we all grow in our faith. This afternoon (Sunday) I leave for my yearly retreat. As you may remember, every priest is required to make a yearly retreat. I will be making my retreat with the Monks at St. Vincent Archabbey. Not only did I go to school at St. Vincent, but I had the privilege of working with the Monks when I was stationed in St. Marys, PA. Please keep me in your prayers this week as you will be in mine. Congratulations to Jessica Emerick and Joseph Guild who were united in the Sacrament of Marriage here at St. Peter Cathedral. May God bless them with many happy and healthy years together. Where is September going? Continue to enjoy the beautiful weather while we have it. For the last few years, September has proven to be a beautiful month. Pray that this September is no different!

Weekend Mass Celebrants September 16/17 4:00 PM Saturday ~ Fr. Michael 6:30 AM Sunday ~ Fr. Michael 8:30 AM ~ Fr. Jason 11:00 AM ~ Fr. Michael

Thank you to everyone who received the Sacrament of the Sick after all the weekend Masses a few weeks ago. Fr. Mike and I anointed around 100 people. We will continue to offer this Sacrament on a regular basis after all the weekend Masses.

“ Catholicism: The Pivotal Players ” will be offered in Synod Hall on Wednesdays from 7:00 - 8:30 PM, September 13 through October 18. Please note that the program on 9/13 will run until 8:45 PM. There is no charge for the program, but preregistration @ [email protected] or after Masses on September 9/10 will help us plan seating and refreshments. Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (1475-1565) is our first “Pivotal Player.” Primarily a sculptor, his most famous works are the Statue of David and the Pieta. He painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and was the architect of St Peter’s Basilica. Michelangelo’s distinctive style and realism in sculpture and painting was unprecedented. Bishop Barron gives us a tour of these famous works and many more. After watching the DVD you are likely to view Michelangelo’s masterpieces differently than you ever have before. Bishop Barron describes the artistic and religious significance of each and how they have profoundly influenced the prayer and worship of believers since the 15th century. Dr. Michael DeSanctis, known internationally for his knowledge of religious art and architecture, will watch the video with us and share his insights on Michelangelo’s contributions to the Catholic Church. This first video is longer than the rest, so class will run until approximately 8:45 PM. CLASS SCHEDULE 9/13- Michelangelo w/ Dr. Michael DeSanctis, Professor, Theology, Gannon University 9/20- Blessed John Henry Newman w/ Fr. Nick Rouch, Vicar for Education, Erie RCD 9/27- St. Thomas Aquinas w/ Fr. The choir will meet for the first time this season, at 10:15am on Sunday, September 17th. We are looking for new members. If you enjoy singing and want to become part of this Liturgical Ministry, please consider joining us. As a rule, we do not have rehearsals in the evening, except if needed for a large event. This year we are combining the Children’s Choir with the Adult Choir. If you have children already in the choir we hope to see them back this year. They will sing with the adults. It will give them excellent training in learning to sing harmony.

Dr. Aaron Kerr, Assistant Professor, Philosophy,

Exaltation of the Holy Cross The cross was once the most horrible way to die, fit only for the lowest of criminals whose crimes were nailed above their heads as examples to those who would see them. Christ humbled himself, by being born in a barn, by living as a man, and by dying on a cross with the words "King of the Jews" written above his head for all to see. As Christ transformed himself through his death and resurrection, and changed death from something to be feared to the beginning of new life, he transformed the cross from an object of fear to a symbol of hope, and from a sign of death to the greatest symbol of love, and everlasting life.

The Diocese of Erie is very excited about the opportunity to participate in the Take Me to Worship campaign that is being promoted in Erie County this summer and fall, August 15 – October 30, 2017. Data from this campaign has shown that when children participate in regular, weekly, organized religion, they are less likely to be involved in violence, drug and alcohol use, and committing suicide. Let’s take our families to mass regularly! To find out more and to get involved, please visit www.takemetoworship.org or contact the Family Life Office at 814-824-1261 or [email protected].
