From the Rector’s Desk…. Our Parish Breakfast is next Sunday, November 5th following the 8:30 am Mass in the Cathedral Prep Cafeteria. The breakfast is free of charge and open to everyone. It is not too late to sign up! You can sign up after all the weekend Masses or by calling the Rectory Office. Please plan on attending. I look forward to seeing you at the breakfast. Wednesday, November 1st, is the Solemnity of All Saints, a Holy Day of Obligation. Masses for the Holy Day are Tuesday at 5:15 pm and Wednesday at 6:30 am, 12:10 pm and 5:15 pm. Confessions will be heard as usual on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 4:30 pm -5:00 pm. This Thursday, November 2, at the 5:15 pm mass we will remember the parishioners of the Cathedral Parish who have died this past year. We have invited their families to join us for this special mass. Mass will begin with the reading of the deceased names and a family member processing with a candle in memory of their loved one. I encourage everyone to try and attend this mass. Even though you may not have lost a loved one this past year, your presence and support brings great comfort to the families of the deceased. During the month of November, we remember in a special way all our deceased relatives and friends at all the masses. A Book of Remembrance has been placed in front of the St. Joseph statue. I invite everyone to take the time and stop by to write in the names of their deceased loved ones and friends they would like to have included in all the November masses. Thank you to everyone who attended our concert last Sunday afternoon. I think you would agree that Bruce, Daniel and John did an outstanding job. The music they performed was simply beautiful. For many of us this was the first time we heard the beautiful music of our brothers and sisters of the Jewish Faith. I want to thank Mr. Herring for putting together such a wonderful Music Series. Please check the bulletin for our next concert. I am happy to announce that we have broken an attendance record at the 4:00 pm Saturday evening Mass. Two weekends ago we had 270 people in attendance. Quickly looking at last year's October’s attendance numbers it seems that we are averaging almost 100 more people at the 4:00 pm Mass. Since the summer of 2013 when the Mass was at 5:00 pm our lowest attendance was 90 people. Since we moved the Mass to 4:00 pm and added air conditioning we have grown to 270 people and counting! I want to thank all the visitors from out of town and other visitors from parishes in town who come and worship at the 4:00 pm Mass. Know how happy we are to have you at the Cathedral and how much you add to our prayer.
Are you a Pivotal Player? According to Bishop Robert Barron, a pivotal player is a person who shapes the Church and changes the world. A pivotal player can provide a change in direction or outcome and serve an important role. It may be easy to see ourselves as pivotal within our families or in our jobs, but within the Church? We often think pivotal players in the Church are from another time, were famous or well educated, ordained or martyred. Some were, but before they were what made them known, they were/are typical people of their time. They were children, rich and poor, scholars and uneducated, physically and mentally strong or frail. What makes them pivotal? What do/did they do to impact the direction of things or make a difference? Simply put: they valued a personal relationship with God and are/were willing to allow Him to make a difference. They spread the Kingdom of God on earth in ways large and small in their own time and in their own neighborhood. Some cared for the poor, some stood firm in the face of injustice, some led quiet lives in faithful service to their families, some penned historic works of literature and some created magnificent works of art. All prayed. Ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Anything done through the power of faith is extraordinary. With God, ALL things are possible. "For the eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout the earth that He may support those whose heart is completely His.” (2Chronicles 16:9) Think of the angel Gabriel's response to a teenage girl in Nazareth, "For nothing is impossible with God.” (Luke 1:37) or St. Paul's words, “Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us.” (Ephesians 3:20) (Chip Ingram, 1/13/16, livingontheedge.org) It comes down to this. It is not so much what we can do, but what God can do through us. Never underestimate the power of a smile, a prayer, a kind word, an acknowledgement of the value of a life others don't value, a pair of socks for someone whose feet are cold…..Be pivotal.
Kenneth Danchik, Associate Organist of St. Paul Cathedral in Pittsburgh, earned a Master’s Degree in Organ and Sacred Music from Duquesne University, and the Fellowship diploma from the American Guild of Organists. He is especially attuned to the organ music of American composers, and French composers of the classic through contemporary eras. A frequent visitor to the organ lofts of Paris, he will be returning to play a solo recital at the Cathedral of Notre Dame in the fall of 2019. His Pittsburgh cathedral responsibilities include playing the monumental Beckerath Organ, accompanying the choir, and directing the Cathedral Ringers handbell choir. In addition to his cathedral music ministry, he is active as a recitalist, organ teacher and composer.
The Bishop's Breakfast Christmas donation drive was very successful last year. We thought, why not do it again? The date is set for Tuesday, December 12, 2017. We would love for all of you to be involved this year at a level you feel most comfortable at. It was helpful last year to have additional volunteers helping with the clothing drive and will welcome your help. WE ARE ASKING FOR *Warm blankets *Socks for men, women and children - warm socks *Boxers and t-shirts in all sizes for men *Clothing for men, women and children - all sizes. Last year the adults shopped for their children. *Warm hats, gloves and scarves. *Hoodies and jackets for men, women and children This is the beginning. We could use your help in recruiting volunteers and items for our clients. Bishop Persico will once again attend and pass out the gifts and offer encouraging words to our clients. A member of our parish will be available after all the weekend Masses to collect any donations for this celebration starting October 21 until November 11, 2017. Please look next week for a special insert in the bulletin and a vocation table in the Cathedral. Here is a simple prayer for us this week: “Lord, you created me for a singular purpose. Show me my vocation, and help me to follow and trust in you. Amen!” If you have any questions on your vocation or how to raise awareness, please contact Fr. Mike.
