From the Rector’s Desk…. It is with great joy that we welcome Sarah DelFraino to St. Peter Cathedral. Know what an honor it is to have you as a member of our parish family. Spread the word that we will offer a 6:30 am Mass and a 9:00 am Mass on Labor Day. Especially spread the word to those people who may not belong to the Cathedral parish. The 2017 Catholic Education Collection will take place the weekend of September 16-17. The Catholic Faith, which we believe and practice, has been handed on through the centuries. Our challenge as Catholic faithful is the same: To hand on the faith to succeeding generations. Your help is needed to assist in this challenge. Please give generously to this year's Catholic Education Collection. One-half of this collection stays here at St. Peter Cathedral to help support our own religious education program. As always, know that your generosity is most appreciated. We are getting ready to begin our RCIA program in September. This is the process by which a person becomes a member of the Catholic Church. If you are interested or know anyone who is interested in becoming a member of the church, please have them give Deacon Ray a call at 453-6677. He will be more than happy to help. Welcome back to our college students, especially those from Gannon University and Penn State Behrend. Know how much we missed you over the summer and how happy we are to have you back. Know you are always welcome here at the Cathedral. Tomorrow many of our children begin a new school year. A new school year offers endless possibilities for our young people. We pray for all our children that they make grow in their knowledge and love of God. In a special way, we pray for the principals, teachers and students of the Erie Catholic School System and the Erie Public School District. This is for both school systems, a new beginning. We pray for a safe and successful year for both. Our community can only benefit from our young people receiving a quality education. After all they are the future of church and community. Fr. David has been gone for a week and is getting settled in at Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. We pray for him and his studies. I am sure it is an adjustment going back to school after being in a parish for four years. We look forward to his return to the Cathedral during his school breaks and vacations.

Weekend Mass Celebrants September 2/3 4:00 PM Saturday ~ Fr. Michael 6:30 AM Sunday ~ Fr. Michael 8:30 AM ~ Fr. Mike 11:00 AM ~ Fr. Jason

I know I thanked you last week for your generosity toward the “Erie Gives Day”, but your generosity continues. We are still receiving donations from people who forgot about the day or were not able to give on that day. I will share with you the final total in a few weeks. Plan on participating in our Continuing Education Series this fall. We are offering Bishop Barron’s Pivotal Players videos. This is a great way to grow in our faith. See the announcement in today's bulletin for more details.

PIVOTAL PLAYERS We each have received gifts that, with God’s Grace, enable us to share His love and help bring about the Kingdom of God here on earth. Throughout the history of the church, many have accepted this call and have shared their gifts with the Church in profound ways. Some are very familiar to us as is St. Peter in today’s Gospel (Mt. 16:13-28). Upon professing his belief in Jesus, Peter received his commission as the Rock upon which Jesus would build His Church. In Catholicism: The Pivotal Players, Bishop Robert Barron shares the stories of some familiar and not so familiar people who have accepted God’s call and used their gifts to impact the world in most profound ways. Each influenced the world far outside their homes and the times in which they lived. Come journey around the world and through time with Bishop Barron though his magnificently produced videos to meet six Pivotal Players. We will learn much of the familiar St. Francis of Assisi who received the call to “rebuild my church” and create true and lasting reform built on the solid rock that is the radical witness of the saints. Bishop Barron refers to St. Thomas Aquinas frequently in his other programs as one who tells us more about how “to believe is to think and that the life of the mind is integral to life in Christ”. Blessed John Henry Newman, with whom we may be less familiar, used his prodigious intellectual gifts to help the Church better understand its identity and mission and engage in the challenges of a secular age. St. Catherine of Sienna witnessed to a higher world beyond the material. Her life constitutes a powerful challenge to the flattened-out secularism of our time. She impacted the Papacy in a profound way. G. K. Chesterton, a convert, witnessed to joy as the fundamental disposition of effective evangelization and life in Christ as a day-to-day encounter with an abundant and surprising offer of grace. Michelangelo serves as a privileged representative of the creative potential engendered by the Catholic Faith and the creative artistry, through which we glimpse the power and glory of the Lord. (WordonFire.Org)

Catholicism: The Pivotal Players, will be offered in Synod Hall on Wednesdays @7:00 PM from September 13 through October 18. Each approx. 50-minute video will be followed by a brief discussion session with an “expert” on that week’s Pivotal Player. There is no charge for the program, but preregistration @ [email protected] or after Masses on September 2/3 and 9/10 is appreciated.

The choir will meet for the first time this season, at 10:15am on Sunday, September 17th. We are looking for new members. If you enjoy singing and want to become part of this Liturgical Ministry, please consider joining us. As a rule, we do not have rehearsals in the evening, except if needed for a large event. This year we are combining the Children’s Choir with the Adult Choir. If you have children already in the choir we hop to see them back this year. They will sing wit the adults. It will give them excellent training in learning to sing harmony.

CONSOLING THE HEART OF JESUS A 10 week course on Consoling the Heart of Jesus. Course begins on Tuesday, August 22 at St. Andrew Arundel Hall from 7 to 8:15. The book used in this course is: Consoling the Heart of Jesus by Michael E. Gaitley, MIC. Book may be purchased at time of sign up for $5. All are welcome, if any questions contact Mary Therese Riley at 814-452-6603.

The Diocese of Erie is very excited about the opportunity to participate in the Take Me to Worship campaign that is being promoted in Erie County this summer and fall, August 15 – October 30, 2017. Data from this campaign has shown that when children participate in regular, weekly, organized religion, they are less likely to be involved in violence, drug and alcohol use, and committing suicide. Let’s take our families to mass regularly! To find out more and to get involved, please visit www.takemetoworship.org or contact the Family Life Office at 814-824-1261 or [email protected].
