ERIE, PA

From the Rector’s Desk…. A warm welcome to all our guests with us this Thanksgiving weekend. It is great to have you with us and know you are always welcome to worship with us when you are in town. Congratulations to Will Clark and Marisa Rodriguez who were united in the Sacrament of Marriage here at St. Peter Cathedral. May God bless them with many happy and healthy years together Today we celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King, the last Sunday in the Church Year. Next Sunday we begin a new Liturgical Year with the First Sunday of Advent. It is hard to believe that we are ready to begin Advent. Where has the time gone? We are happy to have Fr. David home for a few days. Please keep him in your prayers as he continues his studies at the Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. We look forward to his return for his Christmas break. Solemn Vespers are being held on the first three Sundays of Advent at 4:00 pm. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend. Homilist/Presider for Solemn Vespers is as follows. December 3rd, Fr. Michael December 10th, Fr. Jason Mitchell December 17th, Bishop Persico After Vespers on December 17th, the youth of our parish will be putting on a Christmas Concert. You are not going to want to miss this concert. We are blessed to have so many very talented young people willing to share their musical talents with their parish. The Parish Office will be closed on Monday, November 27, so that our staff can enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday with their families. The office will reopen on Tuesday, November 28th at 9:00 am. As always, in the case of an emergency, I will be around to help. On the First Friday of each month, following the 12:10 pm Mass, we have Eucharistic Adoration. We are asking people to sign up for half hour slots to spend time with our Eucharistic Lord in prayer. I know that many people work and it is difficult to attend because of conflicting schedules. I would encourage those who are able to attend, to sign up in the back of church. Adoration concludes at 5:00 pm with Benediction. This will be the best half hour of your day!

It is with great joy that we welcome John and Becky Dill, Thomas and Patricia Theiss, and Jeannette Cook to St. Peter Cathedral. Know what an honor it is to have you as members of our parish family.

VESPERS At 4:00 each Sunday afternoon during Advent, we will gather for Vespers. Vespers, also called Evening Prayer, is part of the Liturgy of the Hours, known as the Divine Office. In the Liturgy of the Hours, the Church fulfills Jesus' command to "pray always." Through this prayer, the people of God sanctify the day by continual praise of God and prayers of intercession for the needs of the world. The Liturgy of the Hours includes several specified times of prayer. The most important times, called the "hinge hours," are Morning Prayer (which takes place upon rising) and Evening Prayer (which takes place as dusk begins to fall). The other hours are the Office of Readings (a service with a biblical reading and a reading from the Fathers or Church writers or a reading related to a saint which may take place at any time of day), a Daytime Prayer (which may take place at Midmorning, Midday, or Midafternoon), and Night Prayer (said before going to sleep). Bishops, priests, deacons, and many men and women in consecrated life pray the Liturgy of the Hours each day. Their work is organized around this prayer, keeping God always at the center of their days. Lay people are encouraged to pray the Liturgy of the Hours as well, especially Morning and Evening Prayer. (USCCB) Vespers begin with a hymn suited to the season. This is followed by the choral chanting of two Psalms. Each Psalm is preceded by an antiphon and followed by a brief silence. A Scripture reading is next, followed by a reflection and a responsory song. The Canticle of Mary (The Magnificat) is then sung. Vespers conclude with intercessions, recitation of the Lord’s Prayer, a concluding prayer, blessing and dismissal. It is a beautiful way to join in praise as we begin each week of Advent. The schedule and Presiders are: 12/3 Fr. Michael Ferrick 12/10 Fr. Jason Mitchell- Fr. Jason will give an extended reflection on the Liturgical Year, which begins with the first Sunday in Advent, including discussion of the Jewish roots of our Liturgical Seasons and the Themes of the Sunday Cycle of Readings from the Gospel of Mark for Year B. 12/17 Bishop Lawrence Persico he Erie Diocese and Bishop Persico will host seventy five singers T and musicians from many Erie area parishes/churches in the performance of Answer the Call at 2:00 PM on December 3, 2017 in
