Scope:
CLARIFICATION: Detail E3/A-500 is provided as the base-bid condition, assuming conduits may be shifted or relocated to allow full-height installation of shaft-wall framing and gypsum board. Recognizing that this may be determined to be infeasible once the ceiling is fully exposed, detail E6/A-500 was provided and shall be bid as an alternate that assumes the rigid piping and conduit may remain in place, with a portion of the suspended ceiling removed and rated shaft wall constructed around piping and conduit. Bottom of soffit elevation and width of soffit may be determined based on optimal positioning relative to existing conduit and piping, but shall be consistent along length of hallway, and in no case more than 4” below existing suspended ceiling.

CLARIFICATION: Actual cable slack is unknown at this time, but contractors shall base their bid on the assumption that sufficient slack is present to allow relocation without requiring cable to be backfed or reinstalled. If this assumption proves false during construction, an alternative solution and resulting cost will be developed in collaboration with the contractor.

CLARIFICATION: Existing sleeves shall either be maintained in place with new rated shaft wall construction installed around the sleeves to maintain a rated penetration, OR if technically feasible, shifted from their existing location to a new location that allows them to penetrate the new rated shaft wall construction without requiring cables to be removed. Resulting installation shall maintain fire rating, which may require reinstallation of firestopping in sleeves.

LEWIS HALL IS A 1948 BUILDING THAT HOUSES B-OCCUPANCY OFFICES, CLASSROOMS, CHEMISTRY RESEARCH LABS, AND AN A-OCCUPANCY 350-SEAT LECTURE HALL. THE BUILDING IS CONSTRUCTED OF REINFORCED CONCRETE COLUMNS, FLOORS, AND SHEAR WALLS RESEMBLING CONTEMPORARY TYPE 1 & 2 CONSTRUCTION. INTERIOR PARTITIONS ARE CONSTRUCTED PRIMARILY OF PLASTER ON LATH SUPPORTED BY A GRID OF COLD-ROLLED STEEL CHANNELS WIRE-TIED TO STEEL ANGLES SPANNING FROM FLOOR TO DECK ABOVE. THE BUILDING HAS UNDERGONE VARIOUS FIRE & LIFE SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS, INCLUDING THE INSTALLATION OF A FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEM THROUGHOUT, INSTALLATION OF FIRE-RESISTIVE SEPARATION OF THE STAIR WELLS FROM THE CORRIDORS, AND A RETROFIT TO A PORTION OF THE 2ND FLOOR SOUTHEAST CORRIDOR WALLS TO CREATE FIRE-RESISTIVE SEPARATIONS BETWEEN THE LAB AND CORRIDOR.

THE SECOND FLOOR CONTROL AREAS WILL BE SEPARATED FROM THE 1ST AND 3RD FLOOR CONTROL AREAS BY RETROFITTING THE FLOORS TO CREATE FIRE-RESISTANCE RATED HORIZONTAL SEPARATIONS. A 2-HOUR SHAFT ENCLOSURE WILL BE CREATED AT DUCT RISERS THROUGH THE COMBINATION OF A NEW FIRE-RESISTIVE RATED PARTITION AT THE 2ND FLOOR, INTUMESCENT DUCT WRAP AROUND DUCT RISERS ON THE 1ST AND 3RD FLOORS, AND HORIZONTAL FIRE-RESISTIVE RATED ASSEMBLIES AT FLOOR OPENINGS AT THE 2ND AND 3RD FLOOR LINES.

(9) When drilled-in concrete anchors or shot-in anchors are used in reinforced concrete for hanger wires, 1 out of 10 must be field tested for 200 pounds of tension. When drilled-in concrete anchors are used for bracing wires, 1 out of 2 must be field tested for 440 pounds in tension. Shot-in anchors ln concrete are not permitted for bracing wires. If any shot-in or drilled-in anchor fails, see CBC, Section 1923A.3.5. NOTE: Drllled-in or shot-in anchors require special SF DBI approval when used in prestressed concrete. (10) Attach all light fixtures and ceiling mounted air terminals or services, to the ceiling grid runners to resist a horizontal force equal to the weight of the fixture. Screws or approved fasteners are required. (11) Flush or recessed light fixtures and air terminals or services weighing less than 56 pounds may be supported directly on the runners of a heavy duty grid system but, in addition, they must have a minimum of (2) 12 GA. slack safety wires attached to the fixture at diagonal corners and anchored to the structure above. All 4 ft. x 4 ft. light fixtures must have slack safety wires at each corner. All flush or recessed light fixtures and air terminals or services weighing 56 pounds or more must be independently supported by not less than (4) taut 12 GA. wires each attached to the fixture and to the structure above regardless of the type of ceiling grid system used.
DRYWALL CEILING SUSPENSION - CONVENTIONAL CONSTRUCTION - ONE LAYER 1. General Gypsum board suspended ceiling systems shall be designed and constructed in accordance with the provisions of Part 2, Title 24, CCR. 2. Materials Materials shall comply with applicable CBC standards. Gypsum board is one layer of 5/8" thickness. 3. Design For lateral load refer to CBC, Section 1614A.1.12. The weight of the suspended ceiling shall not be less than four (4) pounds per square foot for design purposes. 4. Details of construction (a) General Gypsum board ceilings shall not support materials or building components other than grilles, light fixtures, small electrical conduits, small ducts and the like. All such components shall be supported either directly from main runners, or by supplemental framing which is supported by main runners. No vertical loads other than gypsum board dead load shall be applied to crossfurring. (b) Vertical Support System (1) Install per manufacturer's recommended details for use in seismic zones and per the standard ceiling details on A-520 and A-521. Where conflict exists, the more stringent shall apply.

(2) Main runners shall be 1-1/2 channels, 1.12 lb/ft. minimum hot-rolled. The (4) taut 12 GA. wires including their attachment to the structure above must be capable of supporting 4 times the weight of the unit.
(3) Hangers shall be saddle-tied around main runners to develop the full strength of the hangers.
(12) All fixtures and air terminals or services supported on intermediate duty grid systems must be independently supported by not less than (4) taut 12 GA. wires each attached to the fixture or terminal and to the structure above.
(4) Main runners shall be spliced by lapping and interlocking flanges 12" minimum and tying near each and with double loops of #16 GA wire. 5. Light Fixture Support
