Colorado has a series of educational standards, known as the Colorado Academic Standards, which outline academic objectives for students in every grade across 10 content areas. Fully implemented in the 2013-14 school year, the standards have raised the bar for Colorado students, increasing the expectations so they are prepared to succeed in college or careers upon high school graduation. To measure students’ mastery of more rigorous standards in grades three through nine, Colorado has implemented a set of common assessments known as the Colorado Measures of Academic Success, or CMAS. PURPOSE AND VALUE OF STATE ASSESSMENTS CMAS are the only common measuring tool in Colorado for students in third- through ninth-grade. Measuring real-world skills like problem-solving and critical thinking, the tests are aligned to classroom work so teachers do not have to “teach to the test.” While CMAS assessments are only one measure of student learning, having all Colorado students take this set of assessments provides parents with answers to these important questions: • How well is my child doing on meeting state standards compared to other students? • Which schools and districts perform best in preparing students for success in meeting the state standards? • Which districts have the best performance on the state standards for children with special needs? • What schools and districts have the best performance on the state standards for children of color? We are eager to show the state what we can do. We are proud of our Betty Adam’s students, and their scores. We hope to keep raising the bar and increasing student achievement. Please avoid scheduling appointments during these important assessments. Brendan Feely

Health Room Happenings MEDICATION ADMINISTRATION GUIDELINES The process for administering medication (prescription and non-prescription) to students has been updated. Parents must provide a medication order signed by their healthcare provider if their student has a condition that will require administration of any medication (prescription or non-prescription including Tylenol and cough drops). Parents are asked to provide medication along with the appropriately signed medication form which can be readily accessed on our Health Services website at http://www.jeffcopublicschools.org/health/medication.html and on the Betty Adams website Parent Resources Tab. Once received, a nurse may delegate administration of either a prescription or over-thecounter medication, based on the healthcare provider’s order. Please contact your school’s health aide or the Health Services Department at 303-982-7251 should you have any questions.

CLOTHING DONATIONS WELCOME! The health room is in need of new package(s) of underwear and pants only sizes 3t-7t for both boys and girls.

Greetings from your mental health team! We are very excited to welcome Sarah Sterling to our team at Adams. Sarah is a Social Emotional Learning Specialist, assigned to the Standley Lake articulation area. She will be at Adams on Fridays to work with students on improving their social and emotional skills. She is currently supporting all three 4th grade classrooms, and has been a great help in the week she has been with us. Jeffco Schools has been working extremely hard to provide prevention services to educate students and teachers about the importance of Social Emotional Learning. Sarah has experience with Restorative Practices, working with a diverse population of students and their needs. As a staff, we are all still working towards implementation of Restorative Practices, and all teachers will be trained by the end of the year. All teachers are facilitating community/proactive circles at least once a week, teachers are running restorative circles, and the RP leadership team has been facilitating formal conferences. We are excited about the growth students and staff are making! Thank you for all your support. Dr. Jen Albanes, Mr. Carl Duvall, and Ms. Sarah Sterling

We had a very successful Band/Choir/Orchestra Spring Concert to benefit and honor our very own Jack Knight and his battle with Duchenne’s Muscular Dystrophy. A special piece entitled “Ataraxia” was composed specifically for Jack and debuted at this concert. Our band program and Music Boosters hosted the Rocky Mountain Percussion Association Festival last weekend which also turned out to be a huge success for our music community. Boys and Girls Basketball along with Ice Hockey have made the CHSAA playoffs so we wish all our student-athletes the very best of luck. SLHS Poms will be performing at Nationals March 2nd-4th. Good luck to all our girls!
