Reflection on our lady of guadalupe “Mary was able to turn a stable into a home for Jesus, with poor swaddling clothes and an abundance of love. She is the handmaid of the Father who sings His praises. She is the friend who is ever concerned that wine not be lacking in our lives. She is the woman whose heart was pierced by a sword and who understands all our pain. As Mother of all, she is a sign of hope for peoples suffering the birth pangs of justice. She is the missionary who draws near to us and accompanies us throughout life, opening our hearts to faith by her maternal love. As a true mother, she walks at our side, she shares our struggles and she constantly surrounds us with God’s love. Through her many titles, often linked to her shrines, Mary shares the history of each people which has received the Gospel and she becomes a part of their historic identity. Many Christian parents ask that their children be baptized at a Marian shrine, as a sign of their faith in her Motherhood, which brings forth new children for God. There, in these many shrines, we can see how Mary brings together her children who with great effort come as pilgrims to see her and to be seen by her. Here they find strength from God to bear the weariness and the suffering in their lives. As she did with Juan Diego, Mary offers them maternal comfort and love, and whispers in their ear: ‘Let your heart not be troubled…Am I not here, who am your Mother?’” The apparitions of Our Lady of Guadalupe had a deep impact on evangelization in the Americas. The messages that Mary imparted to her children in 1531 from Tepeyac Hill need to be made known once again. In a society that talks more about God rather than to God (prayer), we need to be reminded that God exists. In a world that is entangled with practices leading to death such as abortion, euthanasia, genocide, wars, etc., we need to hear the message of respect for life in all its stages. In a world that is losing the sense of the supernatural, we need to know that Jesus is Our Savior and that He has given us a most precious gift: His own Mother, to be ours. Let us turn to Mary with our most intimate problems and deepest questions. She listens to us with attentiveness and compassion. On her special feast, let us ask Our Lady of Guadalupe to protect especially our suffering brothers and sisters in Mexico and throughout Latin America. ============ “María fue capaz de convertir un establo en un hogar para Jesús, con pañales pobres y una abundancia de amor. Ella es la sierva del Padre que canta sus alabanzas. Ella es la amiga que siempre está preocupada de que el vino no falte en nuestras vidas. Ella es la mujer cuyo corazón fue traspasado por una espada y que entiende todo nuestro dolor. Como madre de todos, es un signo de esperanza para los pueblos que sufren los dolores de parto por falta de justicia. Allí, en estos muchos santuarios, podemos ver cómo María reúne a sus hijos que con gran esfuerzo vienen como peregrinos a verla y a ser vistos por ella. Aquí encuentran fuerza de Dios para soportar el cansancio y el sufrimiento en sus vidas. Como hizo con Juan Diego, María les ofrece el consuelo maternal y el amor, y susurra a sus oídos: ‘No se turbe vuestro corazón ... ¿No estoy aquí, quién es vuestra Madre?’” Las apariciones de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe tuvieron un profundo impacto en la Evangelización en las Américas. Los mensajes que María impartió a sus hijos en 1531 desde el monte de Tepeyac necesitan ser conocidos una vez más. En una sociedad que habla más de Dios en vez de hablarle a Dios (la oración), necesitamos recordar que Dios existe. En un mundo enredado con prácticas que conducen a la muerte como el aborto, la eutanasia, el genocidio, las guerras, etc., necesitamos escuchar el mensaje de respeto por la vida en todas sus etapas. En un mundo que está perdiendo el sentido de lo sobrenatural, necesitamos saber que Jesús es nuestro Salvador y que Él nos ha dado un regalo muy precioso: su propia Madre para que sea nuestra Madre. Volvamos a María con nuestros más íntimos problemas y preguntas más profundas. Nos escucha con atención y compasión. En su fiesta especial, pidamos a Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe que proteja a nuestros hermanos que sufren en México y Latinoamérica.

posadas Posadas is an important part of Mexican Christmas traditions. These community celebrations take place on each of the nine nights leading up to Christmas, from December 16th to the 24th. The word posada means "inn" or "shelter" in Spanish, and in this tradition, Mary and Joseph's jjourney to Bethlehem and their search for a place to stay is re-enacted.

Posadas are held in neighborhoods across Mexico and are also becoming popular in the United States. The celebration begins with a procession in which the participants hold candles and sing Christmas carols. Sometimes there will be individuals who play the parts of Mary and Joseph who lead the way, or occasionally images representing them are carried. The procession will make its way to a particular home (a different one each night), where a special song (La Cancion Para Pedir Posada) is sung.

Celebration Once inside the house there is a celebration which can vary from a big, fancy party, to a small get-together among friends. Often the festivities begin with a short Bible reading and prayer. Then the hosts give the guests food, usually tamales and a hot drink such as ponche or atole. Then the guests break piñatas and the children are given candy. The nine nights of Posadas leading up to Christmas are said to represent the nine months that Jesus spent in Mary's womb or, alternatively, to represent nine days journey to Bethlehem.

Saints life corner Pope St. Damasus I was elected pope in 366; his lifestyle was simple in contrast to other ecclesiastics of Rome, and he was fierce in his denunciation of Arianism and other heresies. A misunderstanding of the Trinitarian terminology used by Rome threatened amicable relations with the Eastern Church, and Damasus was only moderately successful in dealing with that challenge. During his pontificate, Christianity was declared the official religion of the Roman state, and Latin became the principal liturgical language as part of the pope’s reforms. His encouragement of Saint Jerome’s biblical studies led to the Vulgate, the Latin translation of Scripture, which 12 centuries later the Council of Trent declared to be “authentic in public readings, disputations, and preaching.” =========================

Third Sunday of advent reflection “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, Rejoice! The Lord is near.” (Phil 4:4-5) Gaudete! We light three candles on the Advent wreath as we begin the third week of Advent, acknowledging that “we look forward to the birthday of Christ.” This Sunday, often referred to as Gaudete Sunday, receives its name from the first Latin word of the entrance antiphon, “Rejoice.” Of all of Paul’s letters, Philippians resonates with Paul’s gratitude for a community that is active in receiving the good news and putting this message into practice. The Philippians were an example of prayer and trust in the power of God and generosity to both people of their community and outsiders. Paul had also been supported by the Philippians and his joy and gratitude for this community are obvious in the letter, presenting the Philippians as models to imitate. Today’s liturgy strongly invites us to rejoice. The liturgy moves our attention away from the second coming and begins to focus on the coming of Christ in the flesh at Christmas. Joyous anticipation is a hallmark of today’s liturgy, a joy and anticipation that should be shown in a willingness to live according to the peace of God. In what way do I rejoice in the Lord? To what level is my trust in God enabling me not to be overwhelmed by anything? Do I thank God for the everyday events of my life? If we are conscious of God’s loving and joyful presence in our midst and in the midst of our world, where the Good News is fulfilled in the here and now, we will live a joy born out of hope. We are called to live and rejoice, spreading that profound joy in our home, work place, neighborhood, in our world. May our joy show everyone that to believe and hope in God is the greatest gift, a gift that is worth accepting and giving it to others. =================================

¿En qué me regocijo en el Señor? ¿Hasta qué punto mi confianza en Dios me permite a no ser abrumado por nada?

¿Agradezco a Dios por los acontecimientos cotidianos de mi vida? Si somos conscientes de la amorosa y gozosa presencia en nuestro medio y en medio de nuestro mundo, donde la Buena Nueva se cumple en El aquí y ahora, viviremos un gozo nacido de la esperanza. Estamos llamados a vivir y regocijarnos, compartiendo la profunda alegría en nuestro hogar, lugar de trabajo, barrio, en nuestro mundo. Que nuestra alegría muestre a todos que creer y esperar en Dios es el mayor regalo, un regalo que vale la pena aceptar y dar a los demás.
