Ramsgate is blessed with numerous groups willing to give their time and energy to create events for the town and for visitors’ enjoyment. The Town Council has worked with Thanet District Council to support most of these and in 2012 contributed directly to the Queen’s Jubilee Celebrations, the Olympic Torch Relay and the Christmas Lights switch on. Particularly pleasing to me are the revival of the Town Carnival and the increasingly successful Ramsgate Arts Festival, the Summer Squall. Local events group R.E.O. (Ramsgate Event Organisers) is proving a great success; though entirely voluntary and independent, it has our full support. We hope that through supporting this booklet and the new Ramsgate town website we can spread the word concerning the exciting events programme in the town in 2013.
Cllr David Green, Mayor of Ramsgate

R.E.O. Ramsgate Event Organisers Ramsgate Rocks has been produced by R.E.O., a group of 24 organisations and individuals who create and run events, working together to make sure there are lots of things to get involved in and enjoy whatever your age. If you are involved in an event that is not in this booklet, then please let us know and we can include it next year and it can be listed this year on our monthly event listings cards. R.E.O. meets on the 2nd Monday every other month (Jan onwards) at 7pm in The Custom House. Any event organiser is welcome to join and we look forward to meeting you. Please do support the events, so that they prosper. Ralph Hoult, Chairman of R.E.O.

A vibrant centre of art, architecture, history and creativity set against the backdrop of a majestic harbour and spectacular sands; Ramsgate is truly a very special place. A diverse range of annual festivals and events abound with the Thanet at War weekend bringing the Isle’s plentiful wartime history to life, whilst there’s fun for all the family when the town comes out in force to celebrate the arts at A Summer Squall. The Ramsgate Week regatta is quite simply unmissable. If it’s a good show you’re after, the King’s Theatre offers superb year-round entertainment whilst there are fun events aplenty at venues around town with Ellington Park and St Lawrence Church just two of the hosts to everything from Summer fetes to Christmas carols. This guide brings together just some of the highlights of the year ahead and there’s much more where this came from. For all the latest news on events, do drop into the Visitor Information Centre at The Custom House. Ramsgate has the best of every world for every generation at all times of the year. Enjoy! As you drive into Ramsgate in spring, there is a host of daffodils by the roadside, many planted by local residents. At the Viking replica longboat Hugin at Pegwell Bay, they create a wonderful yellow swathe. Enjoy Ellington Park with its May Fair, organised by the Friends who are transforming this lovely Victorian park, making it a favourite place for families. Explore Pugin’s church St Augustine’s during its events in May, including a screening of a new documentary about the Saint, who landed in England close to Pegwell Bay. If you’ve not been before, go, and find out about an important part of our local heritage. Make the most of our coastline with walks around the harbour or along the seafront, to Broadstairs (stopping off in King George VI Park at the Italianate Greenhouse) or towards Pegwell, seeing the old Motor Museum and the 1930s pavilions surrounding the Boating Pool, once a bandstand for concerts.

This is the season where attention is often focused on our royal harbour, with events and activities around the marina. Three times a year Ramsgate is allowed to raise the Royal Standard, to mark the granting of royal patronage by George IV in 1821; you can join the short ceremony on 19 July and 12 August at the flagpole near the lift on the east cliff. The streets of town are crowded for Ramsgate’s annual Carnival on 20 & 21 July. Thanet at War fills Government Acre with entertainment and interest on 27 & 28 July. Ramsgate Week is the Royal Temple Yacht Club’s annual sailing regatta, with hundreds of yachts from around the world taking part from 12 - 17 August, there’s the Old Gaffers’ Regatta on 3 & 4 August and A Summer Squall festival from 24 - 26 August. With any luck the weather will be good enough to enjoy swimming from our sandy beaches and whiling away a little time at the cafes and bars surrounding the harbour!

If you like the mellow atmosphere of the country but don’t want to drive all the way out of town, then look no further than The Churchill Tavern.
We’re a family and dog-friendly local pub. We serve great home-made food, sourced locally where possible, offer the best selection of Real ales in the area, most of which are locally produced, and have beautiful sea views. What more could you possibly ask for? Classics on our restaurant menu include home-made pate terrines complete with home-made pickles, Kentish saltmarsh lamb hotpot and, for those with a sweet tooth, Granny Jane’s bakewell tart. We also run a brunch club every saturday & sunday - pop in and try some of our home-made blueberry pancakes such as eggs benedict or full english. We have a function room available to hire for any occasion - all enquiries welcome. We are open 365 days a year - including Christmas day! We present live music twice a week, a quiz night on mondays and regular ‘jam’ sessions.

One of Ramsgate’s oldest traditions is the Addington Street Fair on Sunday 8 September this year. Once a busy shopping street, this evocative area is mainly residential, but a dedicated and active local group have revived the traditional event so it’s now a very lively occasion. As autumn develops, it’s a good time to explore and find out more about Ramsgate’s history and heritage. The Ramsgate Society has produced a beautifully designed Town Trails book with 7 maps to follow, which you can buy at Nice Things in The Custom House. Explore Kent are producing a series of trails, so look out for those. The Pugin Society trail leaflet is also very useful and they can all help you to find out about various people who have lived and worked in the town, including Vincent Van Gogh, Elizabeth Fry, James Tissot, Samuel Coleridge and Wilkie Collins.

When it's cold outside, we're lucky in Ramsgate to have a huge variety of cafes, bars and restaurants to visit. From traditional to contemporary, there's probably the perfect place for every taste. With a view of the harbour you can go to The Galley, Ship Shape, the Churchill Tavern & Restaurant, Pizza Express, Miles, all those along Harbour Parade, to the Royal Harbour Brasserie on the end of the harbour arm. In thown there's Corby's Tea Rooms, Caboose, Marmalade, The Kitchen, Age & Sons and Eddie Gilberts, to name just a few! Away from the harbour there’s Corby’s Tea Rooms, Caboose, Marmalade, The Kitchen, Age & Sons and Eddie Gilberts, to name just a few! Christmas festivities begin with the turning on of the lights on 29 November in the town centre, with a day of entertainment and celebration. Our Friday and Saturday market continues throughout the year and Ramsgate Town Council will be organising New Year’s Eve fireworks once again, from the harbour.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT RAMSGATE The Vikings landed here in 449AD and settled here – see the Viking ship Hugin at Cliffsend. St Augustine landed here in 497AD – see St Augustine’s Cross just north of Cliffsend. During the Napoleonic Wars, Ramsgate was a main disembarkation port from the UK and on one occasion 40,000 troops embarked from Ramsgate. King George IV named our harbour ‘Royal’ in 1821, making it the only Royal Harbour in the UK. During the First World War, Ramsgate was branded as the most bombed seaside town in the UK. Ramsgate was a major player in the World War Two rescue from the Dunkirk beaches. Ramsgate is unique in the world for having nearly 4 miles of underground tunnels for the protection of it’s civilian population during World War Two, with a capacity of 60,000 people. Ramsgate has been visited by or was home to many famous people, such as: Charles Dickens, Karl Marx, Jane Austen, Hans Christian Anderson, Daniel Defoe, Queen Victoria, King William IV, King George IV, the Duke of Windsor, the Queen Mother HM Queen Elizabeth II, the Duke of Wellington, General Tom Thumb (PT Barnham’s & Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Shows), Timothy Spall, Sir Moses Montefiore, .A.W.N. Pugin, Dr Collis Brown, Wilkie Collins, Vincent Van Gough, Frank Muir & Brenda Blethyn OBE. Ramsgate was the home of the first international Hoverport in the world.
