Ramsgate Rocks is produced by the volunteer members of REO - Ramsgate Event Organisers. REO is now in its 8th year of helping to bring the people and events of Ramsgate together, with everybody working to promote our great town, to both residents and visitors. This has proved to be a success story. The efforts that have been put in to set up and run events, by our amazing volunteers across the town, and the support of Ramsgate Town Council and Thanet District Council, the public, residents and visitors, has raised the quality of life for all. Add to this the work of our very small team at Ramsgate Rocks, the future in Ramsgate looks very bright indeed. We hope you keep this booklet with you and attend as many events as you can and please enjoy all that is on offer. Thank you one and all.

Heritage Walking & Exploring In 2017, Ramsgate was appointed a Heritage Action Zone by Historic England. Over the next 5 years, we hope to see much of our historic town conserved for many years to come. Ramsgate and the surrounding areas are steeped with natural beauty and history, from our chalk cliffs and award-winning sandy beaches to the local nature reserve in Pegwell Bay. Walking around our town is probably the best way to appreciate Ramsgate’s architecture and

Blitz Walks take place all year and Costumed Walks in July and August. Find out more at ramsgate-society.org.uk. Active Ramsgate produced a Get Active leaflet detailing 4 walks ranging from 1 to 8 miles which can be downloaded at ramsgatetown.org/activeramsgate.

with 440 listed buildings including Georgian, Regency and Pugin’s Victorian examples to be found throughout the town; you won’t be disappointed. Pop into our Visitor Information Centre, Custom House, Harbour Parade to find maps and routes to suit all interests. Most leaflets are free; one of the most popular is the Pugin Trail. The Blue Plaque Trail commemorates famous residents and The Ramsgate Society Town Trails book has 7 walks (costing £5.99).

Ramsgate’s Timeline Cretaceous Period prehistoric life in Ramsgate can still be discovered on our shoreline, from the chalk cliffs to the fossils found amongst the sand and rock pools. 55BC Romans arrived to find Thanet occupied by the Belgic people who thwarted their attempts to overpower Thanet.

Approx. 3 miles From Government Acre, you can walk along the promenade towards the harbour passing The Grange, St. Augustine’s Church and the Churchill Tavern. Then, after 70 metres, on your right walk down Jacob’s Ladder steps to the harbour and the Sailor’s Church. Turn left along Military Road, exploring the Harbour Arches before heading towards the Maritime Museum, passing the ‘Dunkirk little ship’ Sundowner and restored Steam Tug Cervia. Follow the coast, pass the Royal Victoria Pavilion

and walk along the promenade to the Ramsgate Tunnels. Go up the Augusta ‘Rainbow’ Steps. You’ll see the bandstand to the left; turn right, pass the Granville Cinema and walk 200m to King George VI Park to find the Italianate Greenhouse. Head north out of the park and turn left. Finish your walk at Petticoat Lane Emporium approximately 100 metres away. Approx. 3 miles.

43AD The Romans returned to the Isle and successfully conquered our shores. Richborough Fort, four miles, away tells the story. 449AD The Vikings arrived and were gifted The Isle of Thanet for their trouble. Back then, we were still a proper island due to the mile-wide Wantsum Channel separating us from the mainland. Hugin, the replica Viking ship 5

1940 - In WWII the town played a major part in the ‘Dunkirk Little Ships Rescue’, Operation Dynamo. 2017 - Ramsgate becomes a Heritage Action Zone, working with Historic England to research, celebrate and conserve our past. You can find out more by visiting www.historicengland.org.uk For local history books and knowledge, pop in to Michael’s Bookshop in King Street, and the Ravensgate Arms en route to discover more about our town’s name.

(at Pegwell Bay) and an 8ft Saxon Sword (at Stonelees Golf Club) mark their success. St Augustine arrived bringing Christianity to England. He became the first Archbishop of Canterbury. A cross (at St Augustine’s Golf Club) marks his landing site and Pugin’s Church of St Augustine is his shrine. 1062 - construction of St Laurence Church. 1360 - Ramsgate was a small fishing hamlet with some farmland.

1483 - after steady growth our town joined the Cinque Ports Confederation. 1850 - the completion of our Royal Harbour as seen today. 1915 - Ramsgate suffered extensive damage in the first Zeppelin onslaught in England, hence the building of the tunnels in 1939 .

ALL YOU NEED TO ENJOY RAMSGATE Visitor Guide - What’s On - Get Involved -2018

In 1987, after selling more than 200 greeting card designs, Lee became a full time illustrator, cartoonist and designer and is totally self taught. He has since produced work for children’s books, toys, packaging and merchandise and his clients include Cadbury, Early Learning Centre, Mothercare, Tarmac, Marks & Spencer and Oxford University Press. Now in Ramsgate and painting more for himself, he has developed a style which is colourful, whimsical and happily naive. His studio and shop is in Addington Street.
