WEEKLY NEWSLETTER

Term Dates 2016:

Term 1: 03 February - 15 April Term 2: 02 May - 08 July We are all looking forward to seeing you at our School Picnic this Term 3: 25 July - 23 September coming Wednesday! Spend the first hour visiting your child’s room and Term 4: 10 October - no later than 20 December then joining up with everyone out on the grass by the stage from

6-7pm for a picnic. Fingers crossed we get one of those lovely summer evenings that we have been enjoying!

VIA - a reminder that this programme gets underway this week. All children taking part in this optional programme have received a letter from their VIA teacher. VIA operates over two days (Tuesday and Thursday) with each class having one lesson a week. Please check with your child’s teacher for actual timetable details. The following information was provided in our first newsletter for the school year - Our school offers a Values in Action programme for 30 minutes each week starting from Week 4. This is completely voluntary and permission is required for your child to be part of this programme (which is collected upon enrolment). Please notify us in writing if you wish to make a change in this respect. Children who do not participate in this programme will continue to learn in a buddy class. VIA (Values in Action), focuses each week on the actions of a character from a Bible story which the children process and try to put into action during the following week. Hence the name “Values in Action”

Supporting your child with their learning - do you want to find out more about PB4L and our Gotcha system. Follow this link to find out more. Since the beginning of term we have had a PB4L focus on making the correct choices before school, which includes not playing on the adventure playgrounds or in the sandpit before school. For the next two weeks we will be moving our focus to moving around safely, which means not running in walking areas. You can help your child by reminding them about each one and encouraging them to make the right choice.

Introducing our Family Worker Hi, I am Kerry Verkade and the Coast Families worker at Red Beach Primary School. I am originally from Invercargill where I was a youth worker and ran a home for disadvantaged girls. I met Dave who was running a boys home and after we married, we moved overseas living in Australia, Europe and most recently in Asia. During that time I have been involved in community development work primarily with women and children. Most of this has taken place in slum communities or working with refugees on the Burmese border. Five years ago we returned to New Zealand along with our two children and we now live in Manly, where I provide unlimited transportation for my children’s sporting endeavours, a regular user of cook books, paintbrushes, gardening gloves, local beaches and home design magazines.

Kerry will be running her first coffee morning on Wednesday come along and join her in the staffroom at 9am. MUFTI THIS FRIDAY!!!! We will be having a rainbow mufti day to support KIARA’S ANGEL WALK , 26th February - so GET YOUR BRIGHTEST COLOURED CLOTHES READY FOR FRIDAY

Board of Trustees - Our first meeting of the year will be this Thursday at 6.00pm in the PD Room (Next to the Staffroom) You are welcome to attend.

Emergency Procedures here at Red Beach School: What happens to my child in case of a fire at the school? Students at this school are taught fire safety procedures (see Appendix I at the end of this newsletter). Teachers practise these procedures regularly throughout the year. What happens to my child while at school during an earthquake? Students at this school are taught earthquake safety response procedures (see Appendix I at the end of this newsletter). Teachers practise these procedures regularly throughout the year. What about other emergencies? 1. The school has the necessary policies and procedures in place to meet the safety requirements of the Education, Civil Defence and Health and Safety in Employment Acts. 2. Most staff at the school hold a current first aid qualification and are able to assist anyone injured until professional medical assistance arrives. 3. Should the school for safety reasons decide to close early, students will not be released except to a parent/caregiver or other approved adult. When collecting your child you must tell the roll attendant that your child is leaving the school grounds. This roll check is a vital information source for the Principal as valuable time and resources could be wasted searching for a student who has already been collected. 4. Should the school be required to be evacuated to another location, every effort will be made to advise parents/caregivers through the media and other means of the new location. Students will not be released except to a parent/caregiver or other approved adult. 5. Should the school be put into a Lockdown situation either instigated by the emergency services or by the school in contact with the emergency services, every effort will be made to notify parents/caregivers either directly or via the media (local radio). Parents/caregivers are asked to not try and contact the school, tying up phone lines, or approach the school until notified that it is safe to do so. You will not be able to gain access to the school until the emergency services have lifted the Lockdown and you may well hinder the emergency services.. Please remember - In the event of an emergency: Do not panic!! Staff know what to do. Try not to use the phone as this can tie up the phone lines needed for emergency calls. Do not take risks on the road trying to reach the school until you know it is safe to travel. Listen to your radio (not social media) for road reports and advice from the emergency services and/or Civil Defence.

SPORTS TALK &TEAM RESULTS NETBALL 2016 Are you a Year 3, 4, 5 or 6 student who would you like to play netball for Red Beach School? The 2016 season starts in Term 2 however we need to have our teams organised before the end of March. Hibiscus Coast Junior netball is played on Thursday afternoons after school, times vary according to age/level. Trials for year 5 & 6 players are compulsory and will take place later this term. Players must fill out and return all registration forms by Friday 4th March to be eligible to trial.Year 3 & 4 players do not need to trial but also must have their registration forms returned to school by March 4. Forms are available from the resource room. Each team will need volunteers to act as coaches, managers and umpires, so please give this some thought. No experience is necessary, just a willingness to encourage and support the players. Training courses may also be available for coaching and umpiring roles. If you think you can help in any way, please note this on your child’s registration form or call me for further details. Without our wonderful team of volunteers, the girls would be unable to play, so your help is greatly appreciated! We are also seeking someone to take on the role as our school netball delegate. As the delegate you will be the contact person for all netball inquiries/communications between the Hibiscus Coast Netball Centre and the coaches/managers of the Red Beach Teams as well as the school sports coordinator. If you are interested in this voluntary role, then please contact me. Julie Bluck—RBS Sports Coordinator
