Newsletter 26 Feb 2014 Kia ora, Talofa lava, hi everyone, johm riab sua, neih hou, kia orana, goeiedag, bula, kumusta, Namaste, malo e lelei, chao anh, kohomada, merhaba. What fantastic weather we have had lately. The children have been able to get out and about, burning off all that energy during breaks and P.E. I have been in and out of the rooms a bit in these first few weeks and am pleased to report that all the classes are settled and learning well. Remember if you would like to speak to your child’s teacher just pop in or make an appointment. All the Year 6 students were given the opportunity to put their names forward to be a Student Councillor. They were asked to prepare something that showed the Pohutukawa syndicate why they would make a great councillor. We had speeches, power points, and voice recordings that a lot of time and effort had gone into. They talked about how passionate they are about Linden School and how they want to continue and build on all the great things that are happening here. We are all looking forward to having you all as fantastic representatives of Linden School. The Parent Hub has opened and there have been a few parents making good use of it. Some parents mentioned that they would like some sessions on how they can help at home with reading, writing and maths so I have put a sign-up sheet in there for you all. If you would like to attend a forum around these, or other, subjects fill in sheet with what you want to learn and the best time for you and we will get something sorted. Thank you to those parents who took the time to fill in our community survey. The Board and staff got together on Friday night to bring all the ideas together and set our direction for the next three years. We are still in the process of finalising what this will look like, but you will be kept up to date. We are constantly reviewing where we are at and what we are doing and appreciate your input. A huge thank you to Soi and Petaia who have volunteered to help out with Polyclub. We are so excited to have you working with us. If there is anyone else who would like to come along and help with Polyclub or Kapa Haka please let us know when you are available. We had a fire drill yesterday and I have to say how marvelous all the children were at sensibly leaving their rooms and waiting quietly on the field while their teachers made sure everyone was accounted for. They really showed the 4C’s. Last week we had our first assembly with Room 3 leading us. They showed us how competent they had grown with their recorder skills, well done Room 3. This week Rooms 1 and 2 are leading assembly and I know they have got something really creative planned, so make sure you come along. Most importantly this week is our Powhiri to welcome all our new students. You are all warmly invited to join us for the powhiri and light refreshments in the staff room afterward. This is a significant part of our school calendar and we look forward to seeing you there. Melanie Dean Principal

Room 1 In Terrific Tahi we are being creative in the ways we learn our 'heart words'. Each week we have different words to learn by heart. This week one of our words is the word is. We have made it with playdough, put it onto our word web and written the word 'is' on our hearts to take home and practise.
Room 2 We are learning to double our numbers up to 20. We can double five so it is ten, three until it is six, and seven and know it makes 14. We are so competent with this that we can 'break them in half again'. We know that four broken in half is two, 12 broken in half is six and 20 in half is ten. Room 3 In Physical Education, Room 3 are learning to have a confident attitudes towards sport and physical education. We have been building our confidence by practicing our throwing skills using both small and large balls. In a few weeks we will be using the skills we have been learning to play Netby (a game that combines netball and rugby). We can't wait! Room 8 Room 8 has been learning about the Winter Olympics for inquiry. We have looked at some of the events and become competent and confident in our Ski Jumping knowledge. We have also looked at Russia, the country where the Winter Olympics has been held, and used lots of computers for our work Room 9 This year we have begun a read and feed session from 10:45 to 11:00am where the students drink their milk and eat their morning tea and Ms Engel reads. We have been enjoying the writing of Margaret Mahy. The students show consideration by sitting still and not rustling packets while listening to the stories. They have shown they are confident, competent, and creative by using some of the features Mahy used in her writing, such as alliteration, in their own writing, which helps to create pictures in their readers’ minds.

Are you or someone you know having a baby between November 2013 & January 2014 ? Love children and want to make a positive difference in their lives ?
Roots of Empathy is a social services programme run by Barnardos, in primary schools throughout Wellington. We’re seeking a parent & baby to be a "Family Visitor" for Linden School’s 2014 programme. It’s a voluntary role and involves making 9 visits to a classroom, with an instructor, over the school year (around once a month) starting in March. The visits are 45 minutes and held at a mutually convenient day/time and can be changed if baby is unwell. Lead by the trained Roots of Empathy instructor, the students will interact with the parent and baby, learn about infant safety, human development and effective parenting practises. To enable the students to witness all the amazing milestones that occur in the first year of life, we require the baby to be 2-4 months old at start of the school year in February.
