Newsletter 12 March 2014 Kia ora, Talofa lava, hi everyone, johm riab sua, neih hou, kia orana, goeiedag, bula, kumusta, Namaste, malo e lelei, chao anh, kohomada, merhaba. Twice last week I was blown away by the students at our school. The first time was at our powhiri. The welcome that the tangata whenua gave to the manuwhiri was amazing. Mari and Te Aroha started us off so well with the karanga, they really set the scene. The rest of the school sang beautifully with Parehuia leading on the guitar, then the boys with their haka showed their passion. A big thank you to Liz who spoke on behalf of the manuwhiri, and Desmond who stepped up to support Liz with their waiata. What a great effort. We look forward to our second powhiri of the year in Term 3 to welcome the rest of the new students; hopefully we will see you there. The second time was at Room one and two assembly. They did a creative rendition of the book “Giraffes Can’t Dance’ with dancing animals doing different styles of dance such as tangos and rock ‘n’ roll. The audience was enthralled with their performance, making the Mystery Teacher job to find the 4Cs class very difficult. Great work everyone. Last Tuesday our Yr 5/6 students went to Greenacres to take part in the sports day. Luckily the weather held out and they had a marvelous time, with reports back with how wonderfully they were behaved. Have a look at the photos of them showing the 4Cs. This Tuesday our Yr 3/4s went to Hampton Hill for their sports day. These days when all the Tawa schools get together are wonderful with the children having piles of fun together and being able to show how confident, competent, considerate and creative we are. Friday last week was the day for Rippa Rugby. These children had been training for a few weeks and got a stunning day to play the other schools in Tawa. They had a great time, building their confidence as team members. Thanks to Petaia and Mr Glue for coaching and supporting the team. A few reminders for you. It is really important that the children arrive at school for the beginning of the school day and if they are late that they sign in at the office. If children are consistently late or not at school they miss out on some of their learning, which makes it really hard for them later on. I have noticed a few children with sports drinks or similar, such as Red Bull coming to school in the morning. These drinks can be very dangerous for children because of the amount of caffeine and sugar in them. Some children have had heart palpitations and ended up in hospital after drinking these types of drinks as they are made for adults. Please remind your children of the risks of these types of drinks. It is also important that your children have healthy food at school. The easiest way to make sure your child’s food option is healthy is to make sure it is not from a packet! Fresh fruit, sandwiches, leftovers from dinner, home baking, and vegetables etc are all healthy options. Please keep treats for at home. Melanie Dean Principal

Proud Moments

Confident, Competent, Considerate, Creative

Room 1 In Terrific Tahi we have been setting goals for our learning. In maths, these two superstars have been competent in working towards their goals by practising numbers and recognising how to read them. Roman can now confidently identify the number 9 –what a star!

Room 2 We have been very creative in room 2 for the last two weeks. We have drawn some ‘magic’ pictures with Mrs Thomson and are making Taniwha with Mrs Dean. We are becoming competent at using our paintbrushes like an artist. Room 3 In Room 3, as part of inquiry, have been learning about characteristics and qualities. At the moment we are discovering the qualities of a good friend. Here is a few we have come up with so far: Honest, Considerate, Helpful, Funny, Kind, Fair, Caring, Trustworthy Room 8 In Room 8 we are becoming more confident with writing paragraphs and we have been learning to set writing goals to increase our competence. We have also started writing creative pen pal letters to our new friends at Henley School, Nelson Room 9 We have been exploring what makes a paragraph so that we can become better writers and readers. The students have gained confidence and shown they are becoming competent at finding key words and identifying the topic sentence. They have shown consideration to their thinking buddy by taking turns at sharing their creative ideas.
