THE GRIDIRON Sponsored by the Red & Gray Gridiron Club
Playoff Bound? The Vineland High School football team has not qualified for the state playoffs since 2003, but that streak should end this season.
Clan looks for elusive win over Mainland The undefeated Vineland High School football team (6-0) will look to match its best start in 13 years when they host Mainland Regional tonight, but Fighting Clan will take will take nothing for granted -- they haven't beaten the rival Mustangs since 1988.
While playoff qualifiers are not yet official, a win tonight over Mainland should guarantee the Fighting Clan a spot in the South Jersey Group 5 tournament. Vineland (79 points) currently sits fourth in the Group 5 power point rankings, more than 20 points ahead of the eighth-place team (Trenton, 55 points). Toms River North (125), Rancocas Valley (93) and Howell (89) are the top three. If the standings held as they are today, the Fighting Clan would earn a home game against No. 5 seed in the first round. Interestingly enough, that team is currently Millville.

Vineland is fresh of its two biggest wins of the season, dominating victories over winning teams Clearview (61-29) and Atlantic City (35-7) that propelled them to a near guaranteed playoff spot. But the Fighting Clan knows there is still work to do.
Despite knowing top-ranked St. Augustine is on the horizon next week, Vineland is determined to remain focused on task at hand. They know the importance of taking things one game at a time. The Fighting Clan is likely to relay heavily on their rushing attack, led by runningbacks Daivon Seymore and Cash Phillips along with quarterback Isiah Pacheco. The three have shared the running duties, combining for 1,359 yards and 23 touchdowns through the first six games. Pacheco has also thrown seven touchdowns this season, all to Nihym Anderson. Vineland is clearly the better team and should advance to 7-0 as long as they keep their eye on the ball.

The Vineland High School football team remembered last year's homecoming when Atlantic City came to Gittone Stadium and defeated the Fighting Clan, 21-14, ruining what was supposed to be a celebratory occasion for the Red and Gray. But not this year.
As they have every game this season, Vineland showed up and was nothing but business, TBA dominating the game from start to finish in an impressive 35-7 victory that pushed their season 10:30am record to a perfect 6-0.

Quarterback Isiah Pacheco led the way, rushing for 123 yards and two touchdowns, including a scintilating 67-yard scamper that was defnitely one of the highlights of the South Jersey high school football season. He also threw a 24-yard touchdown to tight end Nihym Anderson, his seventh of the season. Leading rusher Daivon Seymore collected another 100-yard game, rushing for 103 yards and two touchdowns of his own. The Vineland defense continued to dominate as well, shutting the Vikings out in the first half as the Fighting Clan took a 27-0 into halftime. Senior linebacker Daquan Cosby had another steller showing, collecting a sack and intercepting a pass that he returned 60 yards, nearly scoring his first defensive touchdown before finally being tackled.
