THE GRIDIRON Sponsored by the Red & Gray Gridiron Club
No "Glass Ceiling" here! Sophomore Vineland kicker Carli Kling became somewhat of a Twitter sensation last weekend when she connected on an extra point in the fourth quarter of the Fighting Clan's win over Bridgeton, becoming the first female in the program's more than 100-year history to score in a game. News of Kling's accomplishment spread quickly throughout area and eventually landed her an on-air interview on ESPN 97.3's "South Jersey Sports Report."

Last year, the Vineland High School football team clawed their way through a tough opening-night battle with Bridgeton before hosting Cherry Hill East the following week in a game that ended up being their most dominant of the season -- a 53-0 rout of the Cougars at Gittone Stadium. Last weekend, Vineland pulled away late to seal a victory in another tough battle with Bridgeton and will travel to Cherry Hill East tomorrow morning for an 11am tilt. Surely, the Fighting Clan wouldn't mind a bit of
redundancy here. That's exactly what Vineland hopes to accomplish when they face off against a Cherry Hill East squad that has struggled to get things going in recent years. The Cougars, according to The Daily Journal, were shut out in their opening week game, a trend carrying over from last year when they were held scoreless six times. The Journal also reported that East currently holds the longest losing streak in South Jersey at 19 games. Tomorrow's contest should provide Vineland the opportunity to work on sharpening a few aspects of their game that were a little sloppy last weekend and, if all goes according to plan, rest for the starters. The coaching staff has been stressing focus to keep this talented group on track for the program's goals later in the season, particularly after they committed four turnovers in the opener. Vineand will likely look to jump on the Cougars quickly, build a lead before haldtime and then coast injury-free the rest of the way.

What many thought we be a walk away win for the Vineland High School football team to open their 2017 campaign turned into what could end up being one of their most tightly contested battles of the season when the Fighting Clan pulled away late to outlast county rival Bridgeton, 27-8, in the two teams' first game of the season at Gittone Stadium in Vineland. The Fighting Clan's defense was outstanding early, but a slew of first-half penalties and turnovers by Vineland helped the feisty Bulldogs stay in the game, which was scoreless at the half. Vineland got on the board first when Nihym Anderson punched in a one-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, but Bridgeton quickly answered back with a touchdown of their own and a two-point conversion that gave them an 8-6 lead. From there, however, Vineland stiffened up and moved the ball more effectively, rattling off 21 unanswered points to pull away seal the victory. Rutgers-bount senior quarterback Isaih Pacheco led offensively for the Fighting Clan, accounting for more than 300 yards of total offense (227 passing and 106 rushing) and two touchdowns, while Maryland commit Nihym Anderson rushed for 87 yards and also caught a 30-yard pass. Senior wide receiver Wynah Kent came up huge late in the game, making an outstanding catch in traffic and ensuing run for a 57-yard completion and then recovered a fumbled kickoff to help put the game out of reach.
