THE GRIDIRON Sponsored by the Red & Gray Gridiron Club
Road Warriors The Vineland High School football team will hit the road for the second straight week tomorrow night, and that certainly won't be the last of it. Vineland's schedule features a majority of road tests this season; the Fighting Clan will be back on the road next week (Cumberland Regional) and will also play games at Atlantic CIty (Oct. 20) and Mainland Regional (Oct. 27). The good news is that Vineland will play two of the toughest opponents on their schedule -- Clearview (Oct. 14) and St. Augustine Prep (Nov. 3) -- at their home Gittone Stadium.

Clan looks for 3-0 start at EHT Saturday night The Vineland High School football team will aim to remain undefeated in the early part of this season when they travel to Egg Harbor Township tomorrow night for a 7pm tilt against the Eagles. The Fighting Clan handled their rival from the old Cape Atlantic League American Conference, 37-7, when the two squads met last season at Gittone Stadium. Conditions look ripe for a stellar Vineland performance; the weather is expected to be beautiful and Egg Harbor Township's turf field should Isaih Pacheco had two long touchdown runs against Cherry Hill provide an even added boost for East (Photo from The Daily Journal) the Fighting Clan's big, athletic roster. The Eagles are off to a rough start in 2017, though it should be mentioned their first two losses were to Millville (47-7) and Lenape (49-0). Factor tomorrow's game against Vineland and EHT opens the season with each of the three primary contenders for the South Jersey Group 5 championship, a gauntlet few teams would be excited about facing. Expect Vineland's well-oiled machine of an offensive attack to put up big points. Quarterback Isaih Pacheco has been stellar on the ground as expected, amassing 238 yards and four touchdowns on 23 carries, while Nihym Anderson (149 yards, three touchdowns) has also ran effectively. But Vineland also saw some glimpses of the future last week, when freshman Jonathon Toney scored from 16 yards out on his first career carry. More bad news for the Eagles comes in the form of senior runningback Tahjir Reese, a transfer from St. Joseph (Hammonton) who will be getting his first action after sitting out due to NJSIAA transfer rules. Reese is a big, talented ball carrier who will allow offensive coordinator Jason Volpe to even more fully open up his playbook.

The Fighting Clan jumped out to a 35-0 halftime lead and cruised the rest of the way, allowing the coaching staff to rest many of the starters and give the young players who are the program's future to earn valuable game experience. Among those highlights were Ryan Shelton's 10yard touchdown run and freshman runningback Jonathon Toney finding paydirt from 16 yards out on his first high school carry. Isaih Pacheco was stellar again, racking up 132 yards and two touchdowns on just four carries, including touchdowns of 52 and 73 yards. Nihym Anderson also had a 49-yard touchdown run, while Nazir Broome took one to the house from 60 yards out and Otis Harold returned a kickoff 80 yards for a score. Phil Blackwell also intercpted a pass and returned that 28 yards for a touchdown as well. Sophomore placekicker Carli Kling also had a solid game. Kling, who became the first female in school history to score when she connected on an extra point in the season opener, made her first five before missing the final two, ending the game 5 or 7. She's 6 for 9 on the season.
