THE GRIDIRON Sponsored by the Red & Gray Gridiron Club
Historic Rivalry The Vineland and Millville High School football teams enjoy one of the most historic and competitive rivalries, not just in New Jersey, but in AMERICA. The two programs, separated by just seven miles, have played each other a staggering 145 times. And despite recent dominance by the Thunderbolts -- until Vineland secured a 45-28 victory last year -the rivalry has been wildly close. Through all that 100-plus-year history, the all-time series is separated by just two games; Vineland leads 64-62 with 19 ties. The game has always been hugely anticipated, but the Red & Gray's recent emergenence as a top program in South Jersey has made the atmosphere even more electric. One South Jersey reporter commented that when the two squads meet, fans may have the opportunity to watch 7 or 8 of South Jersey's top 15 players. The game will kickoff at 10:30am at Millville's Wheaton Field.

Vineland looking to end season on a high note In many cases, the phrase "History will repeat itself" carries a negative connotation. But tomorow morning, the Vineland High School football team would love for history to repeat itself. The last few weeks of the Fighting Clan's 2016 season did not go according to plan, but the Red & Gray bounced back with a convincing 45-28 win over rival Millville on Thanksgiving Day. Vineland unfortunately suffered two consecutive losses after a 7-0 start again this season, but will look to finish the year on a high note when they travel to Millville to take on the Thunderbolts at Wheaton Field in the 146th meeting Vineland hoists The Daily Journal's "Victory Cup" after winning the between the two teams. Thanksgiving clash in 2016 (Photo from The Daily Journal) The game will feature two of South Jersey's most explosive offensive units and a handful of the region's most exciting players. The Thunderbolts are led by the likes of runningback Clayton Scott, quarterback E.J. Nichols and wide receivers Marcial Ramos and Carlton Lawrence. Vineland will counter with dual-threat quarterback Isaih Pacheco, who has 1,200 yards and 14 touchdowns on the season, as well as Nihym Anderson and Tahjir Rease in its own formidable ground game, while Tyreem Powell, Wynah Kent and Anthony Reyes have helped expand the Fighting Clan's air attack and De'Andre Tull-Kennedy has been lethal in the return game. With so much offensive firepower, this game could likely come down to which team makes a big stop in a crucial part of the game; Vineland will rely on defensive linemen like Noah Sansalone and Reyes to get penetration and open things up for stud linebackers Anderson and Rease to make plays in the backfield. The Fighting Clan's secondary, led by cornerbacks Pacheco and Jamal Brooks, as well as safeties Kent and Ryan Shelton, will also be challenged by Millville's passing game. And despite both of these teams suffering early exits from the state playoffs, there is still plenty at stake. Vineland can force a three-way tie for the WJFL Continental Division championship with a win, while Millville locks up an outright title if they come away with the victory.

The Vineland High School football team's hunt for a sectional title came to an early end when the Fighting Clan fell, 35-0, to top-seeded Lenape in the first round of the NJSIAA Group 5 South sectional playoffs. Vineland was the No. 8 seed. The Indians (8-1) played what both reporters and coaches alike called a "near-flawless" game, executing their gameplan and winning the battle at the line of scrimmage to stifle the Fighting Clan's potent rushing attack. The Indians were able to run the ball effectively behind their strong offensive line and control the game. Vineland ended up with just 126 total yards of offense, which included a 54-yard run by quarterback Isaih Pacheco late in the game. Lenape went on to win its second-round game against Howell, scoring 63 points, and will play second-seeded Rancocas Valley in the finals next weekend. The Red Devils (8-1) advanced to the championship with a near-miraculous comeback against Millville, eclipsing a 14-0 fourth-quarter deficit and taking a 15-14 lead with a gutsy two-point conversion call with just a few minutes remaining. Rancocas Valley beat Lenape, 10-7, early in the season. BOX SCORE
