THE GRIDIRON Sponsored by the Red & Gray Gridiron Club
Travel with the Clan Supporters of the Vineland High School football team will be meeting in the VHS South parking lot for tailgate and pep rally to get fired up for tonight's game at St. Augustine Prep. The event will begin at 4:30pm before the supporters, including five school buses for students, travel together to the game. Kickoff is set for 6pm at St. Augustine Prep's home field in Richland. From VHS, take Landis Ave. across Route 40, where it turns into Cedar Ave. The Prep is at the end of that road.

Underdogs again, Clan looks for shocker Sometimes, the words just don’t seem like enough. The Vineland High School football team’s game tonight against St. Augustine feels like one of those occasions. Sure, there are some statistical implications on the line, such as the West Jersey Football League Continental Division title, but not much else. The undefeated Prep – ranked No. 1 or 2 in South Jersey by every regional media outlet – has already played eight games and, per NJSIAA state playoff qualification criteria, tonight’s ninth won’t factor into their point total. The Fighting Clan (7-0), on the other hand, would climb to the No. 2-seed in the Group 5 South playoff bracket with a win, but a loss would not devastate their postseason hopes by any stretch; they’ve already clinched a spot in the field for the first time in 13 years Junior Isaih Pacheco hopes to spark Vineland to a monster and their 106 power points may end up upset tonight (Photo from The Daily Journal) being enough to earn them a first-round home game regardless of tonight’s outcome. But still, this game just feels like more. Separated by just six miles, these two schools’ contests – in all sports – have always been more about bragging rights than anything else. And as the Prep has grown into a destination for private school students all over South Jersey and developed a prestigious athletic program as well, it’s no secret Fighting Clan teams always have an extra chip on their shoulder when they line up opposite the Hermits. That history has always created energy when these two teams meet, even when they weren’t any good. Tonight, that history should only multiply the energy already expected as some of South Jersey’s most electrifying high school athletes hit the St. Augustine turf in a contest between two undefeated teams believing they have an awful lot left to prove: one squad that they belong among South Jersey’s elite, and the other, oddly enough, that they don’t. The Prep aspires to contend for a Non-Public Group 4 championship with the likes of North Jersey parochial powerhouses that have utterly dominated the state’s high school football scene for years, and nothing short of a blowout over an undefeated public school will add to the narrative that they are in a class by themselves “down here.” Vineland views the mighty Hermits as their best opportunity earn the respect they feel has been consistently denied week after week, despite hammering each of their last six opponents by four touchdowns. Kickoff is set for 6pm at St. Augustine Prep in Richland.

The Vineland High School football team didn't care about Mainland Regional's 2016 resume. All the Fighting Clan knew was that they hadn't beaten the Mustangs since 1988, something they were determine to rectify.
Mainland did land an early suprise blow by scoring a touchdown on the game's opening drive and then recovering the ensuing onside TBA kick, but from there it was all Vineland as the 10:30am Fighting Clan scored 50 -- yes, 50 -- unanswered points in a convincing 50-6 win on Senior Night at Gittone Stadium.

Daivon Seymore had another 100-yard game, racking up 117 yards on 11 carries with two touchdowns. Cash Phillips and Isaih Pacheco added 95 and 83 yards on single-digit carries while Daytrell Williams scored his first touchdown of the season on an 11-yard reception from Pacheco. Pacheco also scored a touchdown on an electrifying 70-yard punt return. Vineland's defense was scary at times with junior linebacker Nihym Anderson proving himself to be literally unblockable. Senior quarterback Lindon Williams also celebrated senior night adding several nifty runs, one of them ending in a touchdown.
