THE GRIDIRON Sponsored by the Red & Gray Gridiron Club
National Recognition The Vineland High School football team was one of three South Jersey programs who got to meet former NFL coach and ESPN "Monday Night Football" analyst Jon Gruden. Coach Gruden met with with Vineland, Lenape and Pennsauken for a luncheon at PDQ Restaurant in Cherry Hill and gave a generous $4,000 donation to each program. He also spoke with players and participated in team chants. During Monday night's broadcast of the game, Gruden talked about the event and ended with a shoutout to the Fighting Clan, saying "Watch out for Vineland!"

Vineland hits the road again for tilt against Mainland The Vineland High School football team has spent a lot of time on the road this season, and will do so again tonight when they travel to Linwood for a 6pm game against Mainland Regional. The Mustangs have had a rough go of it the last couple years, finishing 1-9 in 2016 (including a 50-6 defeat to the Fighting Clan) and are 1-5 this season. Their only victory was a 21-8 triumph over Oakcrest on September 22. Vineland and Mainland have had only one common Vineland captains and Coach Russo prior to Friday's game at opponent this season -Atlantic City (Photo from The Daily Journal) Bridgeton, who defeated the Mustangs 37-7 on October 13, and fell to the Red & Gray, 27-8, on opening night at Gittone Stadium. Mainland has struggled to generate offense, accumulating just 183 total yards and four touchdowns all season long. It figures to be another rough night against a stout Vineland defense that includes three Division 1 scholarship players and a slew of other talented stuffers. Maryland-bound linebacker Nihym Anderson leads a big and athletic front seven that also includes defensive end Anthony Reyes, linebacker Tahjir Rease and defensive lineman Noah Sansalone, who is headed to Bucknell after high school. Things won't be any easier for Mainland through the air; Rutgers commit Isaih Pacheco is an outstanding defensive back and the arrival of transfer Jamal Brooks has given Pacheco a wonderful compliment on the other side; Brooks has three interceptions this year. Along with senior Wynah Kent and sophomores Ryan Shelton and Tyreem Powell, they make up a formidable secondary as well.

The Vineland High School football team traveled to Atlantic City last Friday night to take on a 3-2 squad that would undoubtedly be the toughest test for the Fighting Clan to date. The Vikings did provide some competition and was the first team to be within two touchdowns of the Red & Gray into the fourth quarter, but in the end Vineland was too much, pulling away late for a 34-8 win, pushing their record to 6-0 on the season and clinching a birth in the South Jersey Group 5 playoffs. Senior Nihym Anderson piled up three more rushing touchdowns and Isaih Pacheco scored another, while sophomore Tyreem Powell continued to be a threat in the passing game with a 27-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter. Pacheco led the way for Vineland on the ground, battling for 134 yards on 24 carries; Anderson toted 12 times for 83 yards. Anderson also led the Fighting Clan's stout defense with seven tackles, two of which were sacks, while defensive end Anthony Reyes menaced Vikings quarterback Mike Constible with five sacks and Nazir Broome picked up five tackles of his own. Pacheco and Powell each picked off a pass as well.
