Per spect ive on t h e Solar Eclipse By Tu f f Sigler On Monday, we all got to miss 5th hour to go see a once-in-a-lifetime event, a solar eclipse. Even though we didn't have 100% totality, we still could see it almost perfectly. The next solar eclipse in North America will be in 2024, but the next one you can see from Holyoke will be in 2045. If you didn?t know, a solar eclipse occurs when the moon is blocking the sun. On the other hand, a lunar eclipse is when Earth is blocking the sun?s light from reaching the moon, leaving Earth?s shadow on the moon. Monday?s eclipse was a really rare event and I hope you enjoyed it.

Per spect ive on t h e Solar Eclipse By M ax Kleve The solar eclipse was a spectacular event that only happens in one place every one hundred years. The moon?s orbit is very predictable, but it is tilted either north or south a few degrees. That is why there is not an eclipse every month. The USA got very lucky this year because there was a total solar eclipse that stretched from Oregon to South Carolina. However, in Holyoke we were able to view 97.71 percent, with maximum darkness at 11:52. It was so dark that the streetlights turned on.

Prof essi onal Sports NFL By Tuff Sigler Our favorite season, football, just kicked off a few weeks ago. In the second week, the Denver Broncos annihilated the San Francisco 49?ers 33-14. Up until recently, the Broncos had not announced their starting quarterback. The choice was between Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch. As of last Monday, the Broncos announced that Trevor Siemian would start his second year in the NFL. I personally find this a mistake, and I see the potential that Paxton Lynch has as a quarterback. Another rookie that is doing really well in the preseason weeks is the Steelers?new draftee James Conner. In his second week of starting for preseason, he rushed for 98 yards in 20 carries. That is an average of 4-5 yards per rush. Even though he won?t start over the legendary Le?Veon Bell, Conner still shows great potential for an NFL career.

M ajor Leagu e Baseball By Stephen Murray On August 22, the Chicago Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds with a score of 13-9. The Chicago Cubs?Kris Bryant was hit by a pitch. The Cincinnati Reds?Tucker Barnhart doubled on a sharp drive to Jason Heyward, right fielder. In other news, the New York Yankees beat the Detroit Tigers with a score of 13-4.

Old Gym Door Lock ed By:Er in An der sen For many people, losing the convenience of walking through the old gym is a hard transition. Amy Mackay said that using the old gym route used to save time between classes. Mrs. Schroetlin said that the hallway was less crowded when the gym was open, but she does not mind having the door locked now. Amy and Mrs. Schroetlin both agree that keeping the gym locked is necessary for student safety. Also, they both say it?s very annoying when people complain about the new policy. Amy hears complaints the most from her classmates, but Mrs. Schroetlin hears them the most from 8th grade boys. Although the new policy may be hard to adjust to, we will all get used to it soon.

New Ph on e Policy By: Em m an u el (EV) Vasqu ez At the opening assembly, Mrs. Ortner established a new rule of no phones. A lot of students were sad and frustrated. Mrs. Balog, on the other hand, thinks this new rule is amazing. Mrs. Balog didn?t really like the phone policy last year as students wouldn?t socialize in person as much. Now with this new phone policy, students talk and learn so much more about each other. A perfect example is the solar eclipse that happened on Monday. Students were talking and playing on the field with each other instead of being on their phones. Miles Sprague, on the other hand, thinks that this new rule is terrible because he used his phone a lot last year. He feels that there is nothing good about this new rule. If Miles could somehow change the rule, he would have phones allowed only if your class work was completed.
