Parent Involvement Curriculum Specialist Yesenia Navarro was honored at the Orange County Business Council (OCBC) Latino Educational Attainment Awards on May 7. James M. Guinn School had standing room only last week as parents learned about internet safety. Parents also just completed a 10-week course titled “Parent to Parent,” that highlighted positive discipline skills, communication skills, and building relationships with teacher and school. Patrick Henry School planted several saplings on April 23. Lucy Larcom’s poem, “Plant a Tree,” starts off with “He who plants a tree, plants hope.” There was plenty of hope at Patrick Henry School when the City of Anaheim Public Works Department, Tree Power, and West Coast Arborist collaborated together to assist the students and staff in planting seven trees on its field. The day began with an Arbor Day presentation and ended with 100 students helping to plant pine, sycamore, and oak trees on the field, which only had one tree up to this event. Olive Street School raised $1,787 during a Pennies for Patients drive to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Olive Street’s PAL students led the donation drive.

Students rotated through outdoor stations that included Jumping Jack Tag, Circuit Training, You're It, Fun 4 Square, 50 Yard Football, Catch 5, and 100 Mile Club. Students visited classrooms for nutrition lessons on “MyPlate/Five Food Groups and Rethink Your Drink.” There was also a Fab 5 indoor lesson on the five components of health related fitness. It was an engaging day of learning and physical activity. Where can you pet a chinchilla, work on your soccer skills, and make your mom a wonderful treat for Mother's Day? This all happened on Saturday, May 9, at Paul Revere School. Nearly 300 students participated in this day of enrichment and fun. Inside the Outdoors traveling scientist program educated the students about the different classes of animals and provided living examples. A coach from Coast 2 Coast soccer worked with student groups on soccer skills. Finally, working in collaboration with the culinary students from Katella High School, students were able to decorate cookies for their moms and give their special person a hand decorated cookie and card. A student asked if we can we have Saturday school every week, and a teacher stated that “it’s nice to be able to provide some enrichment to students and really make this fun. This is why I got into teaching." The District continues to develop a program for future Saturday School programs for the 2015-16 school year. The program is to weave academic content with enrichment activities to provide a great learning experience for all students. Special thanks to all involved in the success of both Saturday School events.
